Must-hear: Laurie Rubin at Weill today!
I'm back in San Francisco and have to run off to my church job, but this goes out to anyone who has the afternoon free in New York today: Go hear the Harbinson/Upshaw Young Artists Concert at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall today at 3pm. It's only $15! The whole program is worth it just to experience mezzo Laurie Rubin do Keeril Makan's "Target." Totally disturbing and amazing. She's like a sorceress channeling spirits. The piece is scored for violin, cello, clarinets, and percussion, and all the musicians are asked to extend the sounds of their instruments in weird and wonderful ways. She colors her voice to meld into the instruments, she makes all sorts of freaky vocalizations, and best of all she delivers the piece dramatically. I had sweaty palms and a slack jaw from the get-go, and all I heard was a rehearsal! I'll spare you the 'bold original compositional voice' crap, but this is some seriously cool shit.
UPDATE: The text is by Jena Osman; the piece is a commentary on U.S. military intervention. Would love to get a copy of this text if anyone has it...
UPDATE #2: Shout-out to Keeril! Thanks for letting me know where to find the texts. In addition to Osman's poetry are texts taken from "leaflets that were dropped on Afghanistan after 9/11" and from "descriptions of military psychological operations written by a former U.S. army officer."
